I have recently come across some more amazing shots of Datsuns that were raced on the Old Kyalami (one of the best racing circuits ever) in a group on Facebook dedicated to the history of the once illustrious race track… Enjoy!
Up first we have the #15 Datsun 240Z that was entered by my grandfather as the Team manager and raced by Kunimitsu Takahashi / Kensi Tohira in the 1973 Rand Daily Mail Kyalami 9 Hour. They placed 4th overall.
Here we have the #16 Datsun 240Z that was entered by my grandfather as the Team manager and raced by Arnold Chatz / Geoff Mortimer in the 1973 Rand Daily Mail Kyalami 9 Hour. They placed 6th overall.
Sarel van der Merwe in a 140Y GX Coupe. Year and race unkown.
Brian Cooke / Phil Adams driving the #21 Datsun 140Z ahead of George Santana / Hennie van der Linde in the #23 Datsun 140Y GX Coupe during the 1978 Wynns 1000km. They would go on to finish in this order, Cooke and Adams winning overall.
Another view of the winning #21 Datsun 140Z of Brian Cooke / Phil Adams during the 1978 Wynns 1000km.
George Santana driving a 1200GX sedan during the 1976 Kyalami 1000km, seen here chasing Willie Hepburn.
Another one of George Santana in his 1200GX sedan during the 1976 Kyalami 1000km.
Hennie van der Linde / Brian Cooke drove the #5 Datsun 1800J SSS during the 1979 Wynns 1000km at Kyalami. DNF.
Johnny Knez / Ken Critchfield with the M/C Datsun 1800J SSS at the 1981 Castrol 3 Hour at Killarney. This car ran an L28 with 3 DCOE40 webers.
Hennie van der Linde / George Santana / Errol Shearsby drove the #B42 Nissan Skyline 2.8GTX in the 1984 Kyalami 1000km. Finished 3rd overall.
George Bezuidenhout in the #C33 Nissan Skyline 2.8GLX in 1983. Race unknown.
Here is a particularly wonderful photo of Dick Sorensen in the #29 Datsun 140Z during the 1981 Kyalami 1000km. 7th overall, 1st in class.
That is all for now, I hope you have enjoyed seeing these historic racers!
Please note however that I do not claim any ownership rights / copy rights to any one of these photographs. They belong to their owners, I am just sharing them here to show the world the kind of Datsuns that were raced in South Africa during the 1970’s and 1980’s.
