The One Year Anniversary Post!!

So, this time exactly a year ago, I started this blog with the aim of just trying to understand what this “blogging” fad was all about. I kept reading about this blog and that blogger, and could not make heads, nor tails, of it all. A quick google search later led me to the homepage, where I found that you can start your own basic blog for free!!
So, I sat there and thought to myself, I need to come up with an interesting and catchy name for my new blog, something that would bring across the main theme that the blog would follow. Thanks to Google Translate, I was able to directly translate the words “Datsun Crazy!” into Japanese, to end up with the “Dattosan Kureiji!” moniker, which I felt was rather quite unique… Even if I do say so myself. πŸ˜€

Never did I think that this blog would turn out to be as popular as it has been, or that I would actually end up loving this whole blogging thing so much! It has been a great journey, meeting and talking to people that actually know my grandparents personally, that competed in rallies against them, and even the families of the people that were a part of my grandfather’s team throughout his career! The amount of people that have visited this blog has been staggering, and at a little over 53 400 views and 225 individual comments, I feel the blog has been quite successful seeing that it only focuses on one topic.

To commemorate this milestone, I felt it fitting to share with you all the story of my grandfather, as documented by the Castrol (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd. on the occasion of my grandfather’s retirement from professional rallying in 1971… I do hope you will enjoy reading this, and that you will perhaps realise thereafter why I am so incredibly proud of his achievements… πŸ™‚

Sideways at 118MPH in 1970…

This is by far one of my favourite photographs of my grandparents, seen here competing in the 1970 Total International Rally in 1970, which they proceeded to win overall, which in turn secured them their entry into the next years Monte Carlo Rally in the 240Z.

This photograph was taking when, according to my grandfather, “We were doing 118mph / 188.8kmh in a long left hander through a rock pass… Great fun!”

Ewold and Minota van Bergen: Quick Overview

I felt it fitting that my 150th post on this blog, started on April 4th 2012, should be in honour of my grandparents and what they achieved. I found this wonderful piece in the archives I have on my grandparents, and I feel it is a great way of letting anyone who visits this site know just what I mean when I talk about my grandfathers reputation with the Datsun brand.

I hope you enjoy reading this article just as much as I did…:-D

Never before seen photo…

Here is a photo I only came across last week of my grandparents during the 1969 Total International Rally in their Datsun P510 SSS/TK.

My thanks go to David Pearson from Motoprint for sending me this lovely memory of my grandparents… Check out their website here for more great historical South African motorsport photographs that can be ordered for really great prices!
